Meet Canada’s Davis Cup Team for Valencia 2022

When the Canadian Davis Cup team was initially announced for the Group Stage in Valencia, Spain taking place Sept. 13-18, Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime were not on the roster.

This was a disappointment to many Canadian tennis fans.

Since Felix exited the US Open to his own dissapointment in the 2nd round, he has more time than he thought so has decided to join the squad next week in Spain.

Who is on Canada’s Davis Cup Team?

The team is lead by veteran Vasek Pospisil who is currently ranked #130, looking to get healthy again and find his best form.

FAA has stepped in to join fellow Quebecois Alexis Galarneau who was a rookie in Canada’s last tie in March. Galarneau is enjoying his best year on the Challenger Tour having risen to #228.

The newest member of the team is another Montreal native in Gabriel Diallo who currently is in his senior year at the University of Kentucky. The 6’7 just won the Challenger in Granby which was only the 6th event at that level that he’d ever played.

Galarneau and Diallo joined Stephen Boughton on The Slice last week for an exclusive interview. We chat:

  • Diallo’s amazing Granby win

  • Galarneau’s Winnipeg finals run

  • Montreal stereotypes

  • Davis Cup rookie initiation

Will Denis Shapovalov Play Davis Cup?

There are rumours that Denis Shapovalov may also be a last minute addition to the team, as there are currently only 4 of the 5 allowed players announced. No official announcement has been made yet, but Shapovalov is currently in Europe (Sweden).

Canada is in a group with Serbia, Spain and South Korea. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will not be playing so Canada does have a decent chance to advance to the Davis Cup Finals by finishing in the Top 2 of the group.
