The “best lineup we’ve ever had” was how Captain Sylvain Bruneau described Team Canada ahead of the November competition.

The “World Cup of Tennis” descends into Glasgow for the Billie Jean King Cup 2022, featuring the Top 12 Women’s national teams competing for the title of world’s best.

Here are the 12 teams and the respective groups the find themselves in for:

Meet Team Canada Lead By Andreescu, Fernandez

Canadian tennis fans have high hopes for a great result in Glasgow as the team put forward is as strong as it could be rankings wise for Canada.

For the first time, Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu are on Team Canada together.

1. Leylah Fernandez

  • Current ranking: 40

  • Career high ranking: 13

  • Career titles: 2 (2021 US Open finalist)

via CBC Sports

Leylah Fernandez is Canada’s most recent breakout star. The 5’6 Fernandez played like a giant in New York last fall, making it all the way to the US Open final beating players like Osaka, Kerber, Sabalenka and Svitolina en route.

After an up and down 2022 season with her second title in Monterey, Mx and some injury struggles, Leylah is looking to lead Canada to a victory in Glasgow.

Leylah spoke about the conditions in Glasgow in the pre-tournament press conference: “Playing indoors is an advantage for us.”

2. Bianca Andreescu

  • Current ranking: 46

  • Career high ranking: 4

  • Career titles: 3 (2019 US Open)

Andreescu is Canada’s only singles Grand Slam champion, and widely recognized as one of the most talented players on the WTA Tour.

After Bianca made her comeback to the tour after a 6 month hiatus for mental health reasons, she had a consistent 2022 season that saw her rise from #121 in the world to #46 currently.

When asked about her 2022 season, Bianca said:

“I definitely don’t like seeing the #46 beside my name. So I definitely want to crack the Top 10. Hopefully within the next 6 months.”

3. Gabriela Dabrowski

  • Current ranking (doubles): 6

  • Career high ranking: 4

  • Career titles: 13

As one of the veteran players on Canada’s BJK Cup team, Dabrowski will look to lead the talented team with experience. Coming straight from Fort Worth, Texas after competing in the WTA Finals, Gabby should be in fine form to lead the doubles efforts for Canada.

Dabrowski said she “is honoured to be a part of this team” and looks forward to getting going in the competition.

4. Rebecca MArino

  • Current ranking: 67

  • Career high ranking: 38

  • Career titles: 0

Another veteran player on Team Canada, Marino brings momentum from a great 2022 season into Glasgow. 49 match wins, and a rapid rise up the rankings again from being ranked #145 at the start of the year.

5. Carol Zhao

  • Current ranking: 169

  • Career high ranking: 131

  • Career titles: 0

Carol Zhao has played on the BJK Cup team for Canada a number of times.

When we asked about the camaraderie outside of the tennis, Carol said the team does have a group chat going, and due to her mis-spelling of “pants,” that Panda is their official mascot for the 2022 campaign (lol).

Team Captain (Interim): Sylvain Bruneau

“This is the best linedup we’ve ever had” said Bruneau when asked about the strength of Team Canada’s team in the BJK Cup Finals. “Everything is possible” for this group, he added.
